That is where good SEO tools for YouTube come into play. vidIQ is a growth tool for video creators. The purpose of this vidIQ review is to try to answer the following: How can you use the power of vidIQ, and does it still work in 2023?
What is vidIQ?
vidIQ is an extension that helps your YouTube channel. With vidIQ, you can track and compare your performance in real time; that way, you never miss a chance to improve and earn more money with your videos. vidIQ gives you an overview of your channel stats, such as views count, subscribers count, watch time, and audience retention.
Also, you can create YouTube SEO-friendly titles and descriptions that are crucial for the success of your channel. But most importantly, it gives you trending ideas, keywords, and popular topics worth exploring and incorporating into your videos. Once you install it, vidIQ features and tools will appear in your YouTube studio in the left menu. Let’s look explore each feature of vidIQ in this vidIQ review.
Daily ideas
Do you ever struggle with coming up with new content ideas? Does this feel like a real hassle? Then, daily ideas are the right place to start. Daily ideas use artificial intelligence to scan the most relevant opportunities for your channel.
This feature predicts how popular this topic will be, whether it’s suitable for your channel, and whether you will get views for this video. You can either save or dismiss the idea or explore the topic further by checking out related videos.
Keyword Inspector – Keyword research
vidIQ keyword inspector works like any other SEO keyword research tool. Since YouTube is the second largest search engine in the world, you will be using this feature quite a lot.
You start by typing in the keywords or topics you want to focus on, and you can type in 5 different keywords at a time.
Once you type in your search term, you will get key data and stats for your keywords and additional keywords that are closely related to your initial search term.
But let’s break it down for the purpose of this vidIQ review:
Related score: tells you how the next suggested keyword is related to your initial search term. The higher score, the better.
Search volume: tells you how many people search for this keyword on YouTube monthly.
Competition score: This can range from very low to high. It tells you how many videos compete for the same keyword or search term. It’s better to focus on low to medium keywords because it will be easier to compete with other channels.
Overall score: a very useful color-coded score that tells how keyword search volume and competition are connected. The focus should be on those green-colored keywords because these keywords have high search volume but low competition.

vidIQ Dashboard
Your dashboard will open in a new window. It’s straightforward and very transparent.
You can check your channel stats for the last 7 days, 30 days, and all time. It will also show you a percentage increase in views, subscribers, watch time, and retention.
On your dashboard, you will also see the subscribers’ overviews, demographics, which channels your subscribers are watching, and the most helpful feature is the ‘best time to post.’ For each day, vidIQ tells you the best time to post, depending on when your subscribers are active on YouTube. This is specifically tailored to your channel; these are not averages. That way, you can schedule your video upload based on these hours.
There is also an overview of your top-performing video for the last 30 days. vidIQ tells you views, watch time, and views per hour for each video. This is also useful because you can focus on those topics that are the best performing.
There is also an overview of the top search terms driving views to your videos. These terms drive the most traffic to your channel, and you get the most views and watch hours.
You will see top keyword opportunities on your dashboard related to your channel. Putting these keywords in your title or description can get you more views and subscribers.
SEO – bulk SEO
One handy feature that vidIQ offers is bulk editing for your video tags. With this, you can add additional tags to your videos without going individually into each video.
You will see the current tags for each video and recommended tags that you should add to your videos to improve your SEO ranking. This bulk SEO editor track all tags used on your videos, and you can update them faster.
vidIQ Tag Generator
Writing SEO titles and descriptions is very easy if you use vidIQ. You don’t have to scratch your head and think about what you will write. vidIQ AI tools will generate a title, description, and tags for you.
When you upload your video on YouTube, it’s time to add everything you need to rank better.
Under the description box, vidIQ will offer you to generate an AI description if you type in a few relevant keywords to your video. I suggest using these features because essential keywords will be incorporated into your description. The recommended keyword will also show the overall SEO score and color them based on relevance. I have a few orange keywords that are worth pursuing.
Editing and adding tags to your YouTube is essential. That is how the YouTube algorithm will push your channel. If you miss putting good tags, your video SEO will be low, and thus you won’t rank.
vidIQ will suggest tags for you. Choose those recommended tags with a high overall score and those that are orange or green colored. Also, some tags will have ranking next to them, which means that these search terms are currently trending.
Why? These tags have low competition but high search volume. Tags have a 500-character count; try to get close to that, but don’t overstuff them.
Picking relevant tags will impact your SEO score. On the right, vidIQ will give you your SEO score. If your video is not published, this score can only go to 50. Once it’s published, the score goes to 100.
While you are still editing your video in YouTube studio, try to push this number close to 50 by focusing on tags and adding those same tags to the description and in the title. You will see that your SEO score will change as you add or delete tags. Try experimenting to get a higher score.
There is also a checklist. I only do 4 out of 9 things on the checklist. I focus on having cards in my video, having an end screen, adding video to a playlist, and that’s it.
If you can do the entire checklist, that can increase your SEO score slightly.
Once your video is published, you will get a better overview of your video performance.
Check your video stats by opening your video in a new tab, and on the right, vidIQ will give you insights into how your video is performing on social media to SEO score and tags. This is where you check your actual SEO score, and if your score is below 70, you need to edit your tags and description. As long as the SEO score is in orange, you need to work on your video.
How do you get 100 SEO on vidIQ?
Getting a 100 SEO score on vidIQ is relatively easy. I have multiple videos on my channel that have perfect scores. I always follow the same rules and take in all vidIQ recommendations. I saw that the Verasity topic is the best topic on my channel, and that is what I’m focusing on. I don’t overstuff tags. That is why I’m writing this vidIQ review to explain how this tools can work for you channel as well.
This is my rule for 100 SEO:
- Always put the title of your video as your first tag. Put the entire title first, and then add each term separately if your title is broken with brackets or a vertical bar. For example, my title is Verasity Price Prediction | VRA Price in 2023. These would be my tags: Verasity Price Prediction | VRA Price in 2023, Verasity Price Prediction, VRA Price in 2023
- Then add the name of your channel as your tag.
- Then keep adding vidIQ recommendations focusing on that higher SEO score. Also, I try adding longer tags and those that start with ‘how to *topic*’ or comparison tags ‘product/service vs. product/service.’
My channel grew significantly at the beginning of the year because I focused on vidIQ recommendations, tag generator, and topic suggestions. With that SEO score of 100 was easy to achieve.
Does vidIQ work for YouTube shorts videos?
Is vidIQ suitable for shorts? Well, the answer is yes and no. YouTube shorts video has become very popular lately, and vidIQ can also help you rank better. However, an SEO vidIQ score can’t go higher than 50, and your SEO score would probably be low.
Why is that? Because shorts videos are less than a minute, and those videos typically have lower SEO scores. However, YouTube is trying hard to compete with Instagram Reels and TikTok, and that is why YouTube welcomes short videos no matter the SEO score. That is why you should focus on creating short videos and not worry much about high SEO scores.
